Went to the Big Four Ice Caves today with another friend from the chiro office (seriously, I love the people who work there). She had never been out there before, so Mom and I were eager to show her one of our favorite places in the world.

The main cave still had a significant amount of ice to it, but it had receded back into the blue, glacial layers. This trip reveled the bluest ice I've ever seen: sunlight glowing through it made car-sized hunks of ice look like giant, plastic night lights. It was really neat, but there was one point while we were walking up to the mouth of the cave and exploring along the very edge of what could be considered a safe distance from where ice could fall on our heads and kill us when we heard a huge, ominous, "Ka-krack," from somewhere nearby. My heart froze and for a split second I thought the whole thing was going to come down. Thankfully, it was just a warning crack, but it was good to remind us that ICE CAVES ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND NO MATTER HOW NEAT IT IS INSIDE OF THEM, IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, DON'T RISK IT.

Soon after we left that side, we ran into Caitlin and her brother! I wanted to stay and chat longer, but it looked like they were on their way out, and Mom was pretty eager to sit down and eat something. So we walked over to the other side and discovered that all traces of ice were missing, then camped out on the rock face beside sheets of falling water for our picnic lunch.

After our little stroll back through the woods, we took our buddy over to Coal Lake and hunted for fossils. She collected a bag's worth, happily declaring fossils as gifts for her family next Christmas (nothing like lumps of coal, eh? ^_~).

We got home not too long ago and now I'm in search of food. Today's outing was fun and I'm glad to get away from wedding planning for a while, but I'm feeling pretty tired and don't feel motivated for anything besides reading this evening.

Yeah, that was the most recessed I've ever seen the glacier ^^;; I'm hoping that we get plenty of snow this coming year and it all comes back because I worry about that place now- I'm attached to it ^_~ I loved the blue ice although my picture of it didn't turn out very well :P

Sorry we couldn't stay longer, but I'll see you on Sunday (although I'm not sure how coherent I'll be after having stayed up the entire night before doing data entry for Sakura Con -_- Meh. I'll try though ^_^)

I visited in late August many years ago and saw the main glacier about half that size, but the ice wasn't nearly as blue. I'm not sure why it's so blue now when it hadn't been that year. *shrug* Also, I had seen the right side of the mountain completely devoid of ice once or twice before, so I like to assume that that side gets more sunlight, but I agree--I'm very fond of that place and want my ice caves for many years to come!

Bah--being barely coherent will probably help while watching the weird animated movie Jackie and I are planning to rent. I think it may be like Heavy Metal but less heavy metal and more... weird. ^^;;

Ooh, that sounded scary! Glad you are okay, and able to realize how great it is to be okay. Those are always odd, surreal moments.

They really are surreal moments, but also really good somehow--it makes one appreciate life more because what nasty terrible event that could have happened didn't happen.

just think though, if you were killed in an ice avalanche you wouldn't have to find a job OR do wedding planning anymore.

on the other hand with shawna playing DDR in the clouds I can imagine we would be having alot more thunderstorms here on earth...

I was planning to go to the Ice Caves soon. I have never been there and I was very curious; I have heard of how beautiful they are. I will make sure to be careful, though. :/

You should go! It's wonderful! The caves are perfectly safe as long as people don't go inside of them or walk up the ice slope. The hike is very nice and not very long at all, and the view of the mountain the cave sits at the foot of is just gorgeous. I go out there once or twice a year and highly recommend it, especially when the blue glacial ice is this visible.

By the time you get back in town, the ice should be even bluer. *puts it one the list of things to do when Blue returns* ^_^
